About Bekonscot Model Village

For many the idyll of rural life as it was in the 1930's has gone forever, but it's charm can be re-discovered at Bekonscot Model Village in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, where for a while you can capture the flavour of a vanished world.

The village was the hobby of one man, Roland Callingham, who created the village in 1929. Thus, it is unique as the world's oldest model village and has remained a picturesque feature which charms and delights everyone who visits.

Within the 1.1/2 acre landscape there are six entirely different villages in miniature. The re-creation is of farms, fields, churches, castles, cottages, shops, school, woods, lake, even undulating rolling hills. The model village raises evocative memories of cricket as it was once played on every village green, there is also all the fun of the seaside, with a fair, zoo and tramway.

A true pleasure of a visit to Bekonscot is the outdoor Gauge 1 model railway which is believed to be one of the finest in the country. This has over 400 metres of main line and branch line track complete with signals and was built as part of the private model village in 1929 under the skilful direction of Basset-Lowke, a world-class model railway company. Over the years, the network developed with the addition of goods yard and rolling stock. Today, along with the original, visitors can also enjoy seeing reconditioned "heritage" stock from the Bekonscot workshop.

With so much to do and see, Bekonscot Model Village makes the perfect destination for a pleasure filled day out for all the family.
